What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Once you are prescribed and buy Pred Forte, then shake the bottle well before using. Instill one to two drops into the affected eye(s) two to four times daily.

Ingredients

Each mL of Pred Forte contains the active ingredient, prednisolone acetate 1%. Prednisolone acetate is classified as a glucocorticoid.

Contraindications

You should not use Pred Forte if you have an acute purulent eye infection, a viral eye disease, a mycobacteria eye infection, or a fungal eye disease.

Consult with your doctor about your allergies. You should not use Pred Forte if you are allergic to any of the ingredients contained in Pred Forte or if you are allergic to other corticosteroids.

Cautions

Tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take. Certain medications may interact with Pred Forte.

Pred Forte contains sodium bisulfite which can cause a potentially severe allergic reaction in people with a sulfite sensitivity.

Using Pred Forte long-term may increase the risk of posterior subcapsular cataracts and elevated intraocular pressure. This can potentially lead to glaucoma with optic nerve damage and vision problems. Long-term use may also increase the risk of secondary eye infections.

If you will be using Pred Forte for longer than 9 days, your intraocular pressure should be monitored regularly. If you have glaucoma, you should use caution when using steroids and get your intraocular pressure checked frequently.

Corneal and scleral thinning may develop with prolonged use of corticosteroid eye drops. If you have a thin cornea or scleral tissue, perforation may develop if you use steroid eye drops.

Acute purulent eye infections may worsen or the symptoms may be masked by the use of corticosteroid eye drops.

If you use steroid eye drops after cataract surgery, healing may take longer and blebs may develop.

Using steroid eye drops may prolong and worsen viral eye infections such as herpes simplex. Caution should be used if you have ever had herpes simplex and will be using Pred Forte eye drops.

You should tell your doctor if you have eye pain or eye inflammation that lasts longer than 48 hours.

To prevent eye infections or injury, do not touch the bottle tip to other surfaces and do not share the bottle.

Soft contact lenses may absorb benzalkonium chloride, an ingredient in Pred Forte. Before placing the drops into your eye(s), you should take out your contact lenses. You should then wait 15 minutes after you're placed the drops before putting your contacts back in.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, let your doctor know. Pred Forte eye drops should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits justify the risks.

If you are breastfeeding or plan to start breastfeeding, let your doctor know. Because Pred Forte may cause adverse effects in nursing infants, the decision to stop breastfeeding or to discontinue Pred Forte should be considered, taking into account the importance of the eye drops to the mother.

Side Effects

Pred Forte may cause side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor if you experience any adverse effects while using Pred Forte. Side effects of Pred Forte may include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Impaired taste
  • Eye pain
  • Eye discomfort
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Burning and stinging after placing the drops
  • Hives
  • Blurry vision
