What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Directions

PerioGard should be used as directed by your dentist. It is recommended to swish 15 mL of the rinse in the mouth twice daily for 30 seconds, then spit it out.

PerioGard oral rinse should be kept between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) and away from children’s reach.

Ingredients

Chlorhexidine gluconate is the active ingredient in PerioGard.

The inactive ingredients in the base include the following: water, propylene glycol, glycerin, sorbitol, polyoxyl 40 hydrogenated castor oil, flavor, cetylpyridinium chloride, and FD&C blue no. 1.

Contraindications

Do not use PerioGard if you have an allergy to chlorhexidine gluconate or to any of the other ingredients contained in PerioGard.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with PerioGard, tell your dentist if you:
    • Take any prescription or nonprescription medications
    • Use any other mouthwashes
    • Have any allergies
    • Have any current or past health conditions
    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • PerioGard has the following warnings and precautions:
    • PerioGard’s effects on periodontitis are not known
    • Chlorhexidine gluconate’s effect on an increase of subgingival calculus is unknown; at least every 6 months, calculus deposits should be removed via dental prophylaxis
    • Anaphylaxis or other serious allergic reactions can occur with use of PerioGard
    • Teeth and other oral surfaces, including restorations and the tongue, can be stained by PerioGard; dental prophylaxis can remove staining from most tooth surfaces; however, permanent staining can occur. If staining is unacceptable, do not use PerioGard
    • Changes in taste may occur while using PerioGard

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with PerioGard include staining of the teeth and other oral surfaces, increased calculus formation, and changes in taste.
