What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Penicillin V is a prescribed antibiotic that is used to treat various bacterial infections.

Penicillin V comes in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Oral solution:
    • 125 mg/5 mL
    • 250 mg/5 mL
  • Oral tablet:
    • 250 mg
    • 500 mg


Take Penicillin V as directed by your doctor. Even if you start to feel better, completely finish the full course of antibiotics. Take Penicillin V on an empty stomach.

Patients who have an allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, or imipenem should avoid taking Penicillin V.

  • Patients with kidney problems should use caution while taking Penicillin V.
  • Superinfection, hemolytic anemia, serum sickness, or abnormal blood counts may result from taking Penicillin V for a long period of time.
  • Caution should be used when administering Penicillin V to neonates.
  • Caution should be used when administering Penicillin V to patients who have seizure disorders.

Side Effects

Penicillin V medicine may cause diarrhea, nausea, fungal infection of the mouth, vomiting, seizures, anemia, kidney problems, allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis), and positive Coombs reaction. Other side effects may also occur. Immediately talk to your doctor if you experience troublesome or persistent side effects.
