What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Olopatadine nasal spray, marketed as Patanase, is an antihistamine medication used to alleviate the symptoms of seasonal allergies. This nasal spray is particularly effective in targeting nasal discomfort such as a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, and itching. As an antihistamine, it works by blocking histamine, a natural substance that the body creates during an allergic reaction. Patanase is appropriate for use in individuals aged 6 years and older, providing quick relief and easing the discomfort associated with allergic responses in the nasal passages.

Directions

When using Patanase Nasal Spray, one spray should be administered into each nostril twice daily. Before the first use, the spray should be primed by releasing five sprays into the air. If Patanase has not been used for more than 7 days, the drug needs to be re-primed with two sprays. Avoid contact with the eyes while spraying. Insert the nozzle into one nostril and press down to release a spray, followed by gentle inhalation through the nose. This process should then be repeated for the other nostril. After each use, the spray tip should be cleaned with a clean tissue and the cap should be put back on.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Patanase is Olopatadine.

Contraindications

There are no known contraindications listed on the drug label. However, you should avoid using this medication if you have a known allergy to Olopatadine Hydrochloride or any other components of Patanase Nasal Spray.

Cautions

  • Before using Patanase, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patanase may cause local nasal side effects such as nosebleeds or nasal sores (ulcerations), especially with long-term use. Before starting treatment, your doctor may check your nose to make sure there are no other issues besides allergies.
  • In rare cases, some people using nasal sprays—whether Patanase or others—have developed a small hole in the wall between the nostrils (called a septal perforation). This side effect is very uncommon but may be linked to certain formulations. If you experience symptoms like nose pain, crusting, or persistent nosebleeds, talk to your healthcare provider.
  • Some people have felt drowsy after using Patanase. You should avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing tasks that require full alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Patanase in people 12 and older include a bitter taste, throat pain, cough, headache, nasal congestion, and urinary tract infections. In children ages 6 to 11, headache, bitter taste, rash, upper respiratory infections, and fever were most frequently reported. These side effects are generally mild and may go away with continued use.

Serious side effects can occur, including nosebleeds, nasal sores, and, in rare cases, a hole in the nasal septum (nasal septum perforation), which may cause a whistling sound when breathing. Patanase may also cause sleepiness or drowsiness, so caution is advised when driving or using machinery. Let your healthcare provider know if these symptoms appear or worsen during treatment.
