What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Palladia is a prescription cancer medication for dogs that belongs to a class of drugs called multi-kinase inhibitors. Its active ingredient, toceranib phosphate, works by blocking enzymes that help tumors grow and form new blood vessels. Palladia is used under veterinary supervision to treat certain types of cancers in dogs. It comes as an oral tablet.

Directions

Palladia is usually started at a dose of 3.25 mg per kilogram (about 1.5 mg per pound) of your dog’s body weight. It is given by mouth every other day, and the number of tablets depends on your dog’s size. For example, a smaller dog weighing around 12 pounds would typically take one 15 mg tablet, while a larger dog weighing close to 100 pounds may need up to three 50 mg tablets. Palladia tablets should be given whole, never split, and can be administered with or without food. Your veterinarian will provide the exact dosage and tablet strength for your dog.

Ingredients

Toceranib is the active ingredient in this drug.

Contraindications

Palladia should not be used in dogs for breeding. It should also be avoided in dogs that are pregnant or lactating.

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Palladia is for dogs only. Keep it out of reach of children, and avoid contact with broken tablets or your dog’s waste. Pregnant women should not handle this medication, as accidental exposure may harm an unborn baby.
  • This drug can affect blood vessels, sometimes leading to swelling or blood clots. If treatment is stopped, wait at least 3 days before surgery to allow blood vessels to stabilize.
  • Rare but serious stomach and intestinal problems, including ulcers or perforations, have occurred in some dogs. Contact your vet right away if your dog has vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or signs of abdominal pain.
  • Your vet will check bloodwork regularly while your dog is on Palladia. The dose may be lowered or paused if blood cell counts, kidney values, or protein levels fall outside the safe range.
  • Dogs with systemic mast cell tumors may be more likely to have severe reactions when starting Palladia. Severe diarrhea, GI bleeding, or sudden reactions may require immediate dose changes or treatment.
  • Palladia is processed in the liver and can interact with other medications. Always tell your vet about any other drugs your dog is taking, especially NSAIDs, which may raise the risk of stomach problems.
  • This medication has not been tested in dogs under 2 years old or weighing less than 5 kg (about 11 lbs).

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Palladia in dogs include stomach and digestive issues like diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Some dogs may also feel more tired than usual, develop skin problems, or have difficulty walking. Bloodwork can sometimes show lower white blood cell or platelet counts, or changes in liver enzymes, although these changes don’t always cause problems.

More serious reactions have also been reported, such as bleeding in the stomach or intestines, ulcers, and in rare cases, dangerous tears in the stomach or intestinal lining. Some dogs have had severe weight loss, seizures, or changes in their skin and coat. In a few cases, Palladia treatment has been linked to very serious complications, including organ failure, blood vessel problems, or even death. Because of these risks, dogs taking Palladia need frequent vet visits and lab checks to stay safe.
