Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Ovestin Cream contains estriol, a type of estrogen hormone. This cream is used to relieve symptoms associated with menopause, such as vaginal dryness and irritation. It works by replenishing estrogen levels in the vaginal tissue, which can decrease after menopause. Ovestin is classified as a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) product and is applied directly to the affected area for localized relief.
Ovestin Cream is a medicine used inside the vagina. To use it, fill the special applicator up to the marked line. This will give you the right amount of cream—0.5 grams, which has 0.5 milligrams of estriol. At first, you may use the cream once a day for two weeks. After that, you may only need to use it two or three times a week, depending on your doctor’s advice.
The best time to apply the cream is before you go to bed. This helps keep the medicine in place while you sleep. To use it, gently insert the filled applicator into your vagina, then press the plunger to release the cream. After each use, wash the applicator with warm water and soap to keep it clean.
The active ingredient in Ovestin Cream is Estriol.
Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:
History of breast cancer or suspected breast cancer
Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
Estrogen-dependent tumor, such as cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrial cancer), or suspected estrogen-dependent tumor
Abnormal vaginal bleeding not evaluated by a doctor
Abnormal growth of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia)
History of blood circulation disorders such as blood clots in the veins or lungs (venous thromboembolism)
History of heart conditions such as angina pectoris or heart attack
History of liver disease with ongoing abnormal liver function
Allergic reaction to estriol or any component of the cream
Porphyria (inherited or acquired disorder in blood pigment production)
Before using Ovestin Cream, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
Any existing health conditions
Any allergies
A list of all medications you are currently taking
Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Before using Ovestin Cream, your doctor should review your personal and family medical history and may check your breasts or perform a pelvic exam. Regular checkups (at least every 6 months) are recommended while using this medication.
Ovestin may not be right for you if you’ve had certain health conditions like blood clots, high blood pressure, liver problems, or migraines. Let your doctor know if you have a history of any hormone-related cancers, diabetes, asthma, or other long-term conditions, especially if they got worse during pregnancy or hormone use.
Using HRT creams like Ovestin may slightly increase the risk of some cancers:
Breast cancer: Long-term use of HRT may raise your risk slightly.
Endometrial cancer): Unusual vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause or after stopping treatment, should be checked right away.
Ovarian cancer: Rare but serious, especially with long-term estrogen use.
Like other hormone therapies, Ovestin may slightly raise the risk of blood clots or stroke. Your risk is higher if you’re overweight, not moving for long periods (like after surgery), or have a history of clots.
Do not use Ovestin if you are pregnant. Talk to your doctor before using it while breastfeeding, as small amounts may pass into breast milk and affect milk production.
Common side effects of Ovestin Cream may include vaginal irritation, itching, or breast tenderness, especially during the first few weeks of use. These symptoms are usually mild and temporary but should be reported if they persist or worsen. Some people may also experience vaginal bleeding, which should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Ovestin can sometimes lead to more serious risks. These may include blood clots, stroke, heart attack, gallbladder disease, or an increased risk of certain cancers, including breast and endometrial cancer. Rare skin reactions, such as rashes or discoloration, have also been reported. Always let your doctor know if you notice any unusual or concerning symptoms.
