What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Orladeyo (Berotralstat) is a prescription drug used to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in individuals aged 12 and older. As a plasma kallikrein inhibitor, Orladeyo works by blocking the activity of kallikrein, which reduces the levels of bradykinin, a chemical that causes pain and swelling in HAE patients. This medication is available in capsule form. It is not indicated for the treatment of acute HAE attacks.

To take Orladeyo, follow your doctor's instructions. The standard dosage is typically one 150 mg capsule taken once daily with food to prevent HAE attacks. For people with moderate or severe liver impairment, a reduced dosage is recommended. Always swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, chew, or open it.

The active ingredient in Orladeyo is Berotralstat.

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known allergy to Berotralstat or any ingredient in Orladeyo
  • Pregnancy
  • Children under 12

  • Before using Orladeyo, ensure you provide your healthcare provider with the following information:
    • Existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A list of all the medications you are currently taking
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Only take the prescribed dose of 150 mg daily. Taking more can cause heart rhythm problems due to QT prolongation.
  • Orladeyo is not intended for the treatment of acute hereditary angioedema attacks.

Side Effects

Orladeyo may sometimes cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, back pain, and heartburn. These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Taking more than one capsule of Orladeyo a day may lead to serious complications, such as QT prolongation—a heart rhythm condition that can alter the heart's normal beat. Rare side effects include liver function changes and occasional, brief itchy rashes. Always consult your healthcare provider if you experience persistent or concerning symptoms or if you have questions about side effects.
