What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Onsior (robenacoxib) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) from the coxib class that helps relieve pain and inflammation in cats and dogs. It works as a COX-2 inhibitor, blocking enzymes that trigger inflammation and pain. Onsior is often prescribed by veterinarians for discomfort related to surgery, injuries, or chronic conditions like osteoarthritis. The medication can be taken as flavored oral tablets for pets at home.

Directions

Onsior tablets are prescribed for short-term pain relief in cats. The medication is given by mouth once per day at a dose based on your cat’s weight, but it should only be used for up to 3 days. Cats must weigh at least 5.5 pounds and be at least 4 months old to receive Onsior safely. The tablets can be given with or without food, but they should never be split or broken if they are not scored.

The usual dose is one tablet daily for cats weighing 5.5 to 13.2 pounds, or two tablets daily for cats between 13.3 and 26.4 pounds. The first dose is often given at the vet’s office about 30 minutes before surgery, sometimes alongside anesthesia medications. Follow-up doses may be given at home as tablets. No more than one dose should be given per day, and treatment should not exceed 3 total doses. Always follow your vet’s instructions closely.

Ingredients

Robenacoxib is the active ingredient in this drug.

Contraindications

Avoid using this product in cats with a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to any ingredients in the medication.

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Onsior is for cats only—never for humans. Keep it out of reach of children, and seek medical help if it’s accidentally swallowed.
  • Your vet will examine your cat and may run blood tests before starting Onsior. Cats should be at least 4 months old, weigh over 5.5 lbs, and not be pregnant, nursing, or used for breeding.
  • Do not give Onsior with other NSAIDs or steroids, as this can cause dangerous side effects. If switching from another pain medication, your vet may recommend a waiting period.
  • Monitor your cat closely while on Onsior. Stop treatment and call your vet if your cat loses appetite, becomes lethargic, or shows stomach issues like vomiting, diarrhea, or signs of pain.
  • Cats with kidney, liver, or heart disease may be at higher risk for side effects. During surgery, fluids and careful monitoring are recommended to help protect kidney and heart function.
  • Onsior can affect heart rhythm and may not be safe to use with other drugs that also prolong the QT interval, such as some anesthetics, antihistamines, or stomach medications.
  • Rare side effects include seizures, balance problems, unusual eye movements, or facial changes. If these occur, contact your vet immediately.
  • The tablet and injection forms can be used interchangeably for up to 3 days, but the doses are different. Always follow your vet’s instructions exactly.

Side Effects

The most common side effects reported with Onsior in cats include surgical site bleeding, incision infections, decreased appetite, lethargy, and vomiting. Other reactions such as diarrhea, blood in the stool, or mild skin issues like hair loss or bruising may also occur.

More serious but less common effects have included urinary issues (such as cystitis or blood in the urine), dehydration, kidney problems, and weight loss. Post-approval reports have seen cases of severe kidney problems, which in some instances were fatal. If your cat shows signs of severe illness, such as persistent vomiting, lack of appetite, or sudden weakness, stop treatment and seek veterinary care immediately.
