Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
ONGLYZA (saxagliptin) is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. ONGLYZA belongs to the drug class DPP-4 inhibitors. DPP-4 inactivates certain enzymes that increase the concentration of insulin in the bloodstream. By inactivating DPP-4, ONGLYZA causes these enzymes to stay active and to increase insulin levels and decrease the production of glucose in the liver.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus occurs when cells of the body become resistant to the effects of insulin. Insulin facilitates the transport of glucose into cells, providing energy for metabolism and cell processes. Those with type 2 diabetes mellitus have increased levels of glucose that is unavailable for use by cells.
The dose of ONGLYZA is 2.5 mg or 5 mg taken by mouth once daily with or without food. ONGLYZA is available as 2.5 mg or 5 mg tablets and should not be split, cut, chewed, or crushed.
The active ingredient in ONGLYZA is saxagliptin.
Post-marketing studies have shown an increased risk of acute pancreatitis in patients taking ONGLYZA. Symptoms of acute pancreatitis include abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting, rapid pulse, and tenderness of the abdomen. Severe pancreatitis can cause life-threatening complications.
ONGLYZA should be used with caution in patients with a history of heart failure or other cardiovascular disorders. ONGLYZA has been shown to increase the risk of hospitalization for heart failure.
Patients with reduced renal function may need to take a reduced daily dose of ONGLYZA.
Some common ONGLYZA side effects include:
