What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

NUVARING contains 2 types of hormones (estrogen and progestin), which work together to prevent pregnancy. These are the same hormones are found in birth control pills, and they work the same way in your body even though they are administered differently. These hormones release from the ring slowly over time, are then absorbed and distributed into your bloodstream.

NUVARING is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Directions

NuvaRing is a small, comfortable vaginal ring that's easy to insert and remove. The exact position of NuvaRing is not important for it to be effective. Once inserted, NuvaRing should stay in place. NuvaRing can be accidentally expelled, for example, while removing a tampon, during intercourse, or with straining during a bowel movement.

To insert the NUVARING, follow these instructions:

  • Holding NUVARING between your thumb & index finger, press the sides together. Insert NUVARING while lying down, squatting, or standing with one leg up-whatever is most comfortable for you.
  • Gently push the folded ring into your vagina. The exact position of NUVARING is not important for it to be effective. If you feel discomfort, it is probably not inserted back far enough into the vagina. Use your finger to gently push the NUVARING farther into your vagina.
Once inserted, keep NUVARING in place for 3 weeks in a row.
