What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Contraindications

Discuss your medical history and allergies with your healthcare provider. Do not take Noxafil if you are allergic to posaconazole or any of the other ingredients in Noxafil, or if you have hereditary fructose intolerance.

Avoid use with drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4, as Noxafil can block this enzyme, leading to increased levels of these drugs in the body. Avoid taking Noxafil with certain medications including sirolimus, pimozide, quinidine, statin drugs, ergot alkaloids, and venetoclax.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Noxafil, tell your doctor:
    • About any medications you take, especially medications such as atorvastatin, ergotamine, or pimozide
    • About any medical conditions you have, including heart problems, kidney or liver disease, and electrolyte disturbances
    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Noxafil may cause harm to an unborn baby.
    • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Noxafil can pass into breast milk and potentially harm a breastfeeding child.
  • Noxafil may cause changes in your liver function. Stop taking Noxafil and immediately contact your healthcare provider if you experience symptoms of liver problems such as fatigue, loss of appetite, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
  • Noxafil may cause allergic reactions. If you experience symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Noxafil may also lead to QT prolongation, a serious heart condition. Alert your doctor right away if you feel irregular heartbeats, severe dizziness, or fainting.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Noxafil include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, coughing, and fever. If any of these side effects persist or become troublesome, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
