What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

NovoPen 4 is used to help treat and manage diabetes; it is a reusable insulin pen for single-patient use only.

PenfillĀ® 3 mL cartridges of Novo Nordisk insulin are used with NovoPen 4. Needles that are single-use and disposable are supplied separately.

In 1-unit increments, the pen can be dialed from 1 to 60 units.

Directions

NovoPen 4 should be used per instructions provided by your doctor. The instructions that come with your prescription should also be read. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Information concerning how much insulin you should inject, how and where to administer it, and how often will be provided to you by your doctor.

Cautions

  • Before administering NovoPen 4, tell your doctor if you:
    • Take any prescription or nonprescription medications
    • Have any allergies
    • Have any health conditions and your medical history
    • Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your pen should not be shared with others.
  • Use a new needle with each injection. Needles should not be shared with others.
  • Test the flow of insulin in the needle until it comes out from the tip of the needle before you inject; this is to make sure that no air bubbles or gaps in the needle are present.
  • Storage instructions that come with your prescription should be adhered to; if you are unsure, talk to your pharmacist.
  • Your pen should not be used after the expiration date.
  • Before disposing of your pen, the insulin cartridge and needle should be removed.
