Nocdurna (Desmopressin)

Description

Nocdurna (desmopressin acetate) is a prescription medication used for treating nighttime urination due to nocturnal polyuria in adults who wake up at least two times during the night to urinate.

Nocdurna is available in 27.7 mcg and 55.3 mcg tablets; these tablets are to be placed underneath the tongue to dissolve.

Directions

Nocdurna should be taken as your doctor has advised. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage for women:

One 27.7 mcg tablet should be placed underneath the tongue one time per day without water. Administer one hour before bedtime.

Dosage for men:

One 55.3 mcg tablet should be placed underneath the tongue one time per day without water. Administer one hour before bedtime.

Ingredients

Desmopressin acetate is the active ingredient in Nocdurna. Gelatin, NF (fish source), mannitol, and anhydrous citric acid are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Nocdurna if you have:

• Low sodium levels or a history of low sodium levels
• Excess thirst
• Kidney conditions
• Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)
• An illness that can cause fluid or electrolyte imbalances
• Heart failure
• Uncontrolled high blood pressure

Also, avoid taking the medication if you are taking loop diuretics or systemic or inhaled glucocorticoids.

Cautions

The following FDA Boxed Warnings are associated with Nocdurna:

• Nocdurna can cause low sodium levels that can be life-threatening
• Nocdurna should not be administered to patients at risk of severe low sodium levels, such as in patients with excessive fluid intake, illnesses that can cause fluid or electrolyte imbalances, and in those taking loop diuretics or systemic or inhaled glucocorticoids
• Blood sodium levels should be normal before starting or resuming Nocdurna. Blood sodium should be measured within 1 week and about 1 month after starting Nocdurna and periodically during treatment. More frequent monitoring should be performed in patients who are at least 65 years of age and in patients who are at increased risk for low sodium levels.
• If a patient develops low sodium levels, Nocdurna may need to be stopped temporarily or permanently.

• Before you begin treatment with Nocdurna, talk to your doctor about:
• All prescription and nonprescription medications you take
• Any allergies you may have
• Your past medical history and current health issues
• Your pregnancy status
• Your breastfeeding status
• It is recommended to limit fluid consumption from 1 hour prior to, or until 8 hours after, taking Nocdurna.
• Nocdurna is not recommended in patients who are at risk of increased intracranial pressure or have a history of urinary retention.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, Nocdurna side effects include dry mouth, decreased blood sodium levels, and dizziness. Immediately talk to your doctor if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
