Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Nature-Throid is a natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) tablet indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism and the suppression of pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in goiter management. It contains thyroid hormones derived from porcine thyroid glands, providing both levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3) in physiologic ratios. Nature-Throid is used to restore hormonal balance in patients with primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism. Unlike synthetic levothyroxine-only products, it is preferred by some clinicians and patients for its inclusion of T3, which may offer symptom relief in certain individuals who do not fully respond to T4 monotherapy.
Nature-Throid is administered orally, typically once daily on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Dosing must be individualized based on TSH, T4, and clinical response, with careful titration. The initial adult dose is often 32.5 to 65 mg/day, adjusted every 6 to 8 weeks. Pediatric dosing is based on weight and developmental stage. Long-term therapy requires regular monitoring of thyroid function tests to maintain euthyroid status.
Each tablet contains:
Porcine thyroid USP, standardized to provide:
T4 (levothyroxine sodium)
T3 (liothyronine sodium)
Available strengths (measured in milligrams of desiccated thyroid):
16.25 mg, 32.5 mg, 48.75 mg, 65 mg, 81.25 mg, 97.5 mg, 113.75 mg, 130 mg, 146.25 mg, 162.5 mg, and 195 mg
Inactive ingredients may include:
Colloidal silicon dioxide, dicalcium phosphate, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and stearic acid (may vary by formulation)
Nature-Throid is contraindicated in patients with:
Untreated thyrotoxicosis
Uncorrected adrenal insufficiency
Hypersensitivity to porcine protein or any component of the formulation
Thyroid hormones should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, especially coronary artery disease or arrhythmias. Over-replacement can lead to symptoms of hyperthyroidism, including increased heart rate, insomnia, and anxiety. Careful monitoring is necessary when switching from synthetic preparations to desiccated thyroid to avoid over- or under-dosing. Use in pregnancy is generally considered safe, but dose adjustments may be needed. Not indicated for weight loss; excessive doses may cause life-threatening toxicity, especially when used in combination with sympathomimetic agents.
Adverse effects are typically associated with overdosage and may include:
Palpitations or tachycardia
Anxiety or insomnia
Weight loss
Heat intolerance or sweating
Menstrual irregularities
Hair thinning (especially during initial therapy)
Rare: allergic reaction to inactive components or porcine proteins
