What is a Generic Drug?

Metacam comes in 0.5 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL oral suspensions. 

The instructions that are supplied with your dog's Metacam prescription should be followed. Any questions or concerns about the medication should be referred to your veterinarian or pharmacist.

Dosing - Metacam 0.5 mg/mL

Dogs that weigh less than 1 pound: Before each use, shake well and take off the cap. Drop two drops for each pound of your dog's body weight directly onto your dog's food using the dropper bottle. Tightly replace the cap after each use.

Dogs that weigh between 1 and 10 pounds: Before each use, shake well and take off the cap. The dropper bottle or the measuring syringe that is supplied with your dog's prescription may be used. The measuring syringe fits onto the bottle and contains a scale starting at 1 pound. This scale is used to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/pound). Round your dog's weight down to the nearest 1 pound when using the measuring syringe. Tightly replace the cap after each use.

Dogs that weigh more than 10 pounds: Before each use, shake well and take off the cap. The dropper bottle or the measuring syringe that is supplied with your dog's prescription may be used. The measuring syringe fits onto the bottle and contains a scale in pounds. This scale is used to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/pound). Round your dog's weight down to the nearest 1 pound when using the measuring syringe. You may mix the medication into your dog's food or placed directly into your dog's mouth. Tightly replace the cap after each use.

Dosing - Metacam 1.5 mg/mL

Dogs that weigh less than 5 pounds: Before each use, shake well and take off the cap. Drop one drop for each pound of your dog's body weight directly onto your dog's food using the dropper bottle. Tightly replace the cap after each use.

Dogs that weigh between 5 and 10 pounds: Before each use, shake well and take off the cap. The dropper bottle or the measuring syringe that is supplied with your dog's prescription may be used. Ingredients

Meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is the active ingredient in Metacam.

Contraindications

Do not give Metacam to your dog if your dog is allergic to meloxicam.

Avoid use in cats.

Cautions

  • Avoid use in humans. 
  • Before giving Metacam to your dog, it's important to discuss the following with your veterinarian:
    • Your dog's allergies
    • Your dog's medications and supplements
    • Your dog's health problems, including any stomach, liver, or kidney issues
    • If your dog is pregnant or you plan to breed your dog
    • If your dog is nursing

Side Effects

Diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased appetite can occur with the use of Metacam. Other side effects may also occur. Monitor your dog and call your veterinarian immediately if you notice any troublesome or worsening side effects that your dog may be experiencing.
