What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Merional is a medication that is prescribed to treat adult women who have infertility problems and have not achieved a response with clomiphene citrate. It is used to encourage the development of follicles in patients who are undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). It may also be accompanied by human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) to stimulate the production of sperm in men who have congenital or acquired hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Merional is available in a powder and solvent solution for injection.

Use Merional as your doctor has prescribed. You may speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any questions or concerns arise.

Ingredients

Menotrophin BP (Human menopausal gonadotropin, HMG), purified from human urine, is the active ingredient contained in Merional.

Contraindications

Patients who have an allergy to menotrophin or to any of the other ingredients in the medication should not use Merional. Also, patients who have hypothalamic or pituitary gland tumors should avoid use of Merional.

Women who have enlarged ovaries or a cyst not due to polycystic ovarian disease, gynecological bleeding of an unknown cause, or ovarian, uterine, or mammary cancer should not use Merional.

Merional administration should be avoided when a patient is unable to have an effective response, including:

  • In females: primary ovarian failure, malformation of sex organs that are incompatible with pregnancy, or fibroid tumors of the uterus that are incompatible with pregnancy
  • In males: primary testicular insufficiency

Cautions

  • Before you start using Merional, talk to your doctor about:
    • All prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Any allergies you may have
    • Your current health conditions and past medical history
    • If you are currently pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • Merional can cause ovarian hyperstimulation, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, severe ovarian enlargement, weight gain, shortness of breath, low urine output, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Merional can increase the risk for multiple pregnancy.
  • There is an increased incidence of pregnancy wastage by miscarriage or abortion in patients who undergo stimulation of follicular growth for ovulation induction or ART compared to the normal population.
  • Ectopic pregnancy occurs more frequently in women after they have received IVF.
  • Some women who have received multiple infertility treatment regimens have experienced cancers of the ovary and reproductive system.
  • Merional can cause congenital malformations to occur more frequently after ART compared to spontaneous conceptions.
  • Merional can cause an increased risk for blood clotting disorders in women with risk factors.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, Merional injection side effects include ovarian cysts, injection site reactions, and headache. If you develop bothersome or persistent side effects, immediately notify your doctor.
