What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Menostar (estradiol) is used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. This skin patch differs from standard hormone replacement therapies since it contains a significantly lower dose of estradiol. For some women, this is the only dose they can tolerate, while others may simply prefer taking in fewer synthetic hormones. Due to it’s low dose, Menostar is not intended to treat other common menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes or night sweats.

Directions

Use Menostar estrogen patch exactly as advised by your doctor. These typically include the following steps:

  1. Apply your Menostar patch to your lower abdomen or buttocks.
  2. The area should be clean, dry and free of powder, oil, or lotion.
  3. Do not apply the patch to the same site twice in a row.
  4. Do not apply Menostar to your breasts.
  5. If you forget to apply a new patch, do so as soon as possible.
  6. Change the patch regularly, every 7 days.

Ingredients

The active ingredient: estradiol

Inactive ingredients: acrylate copolymer adhesive, fatty acid esters, and polyethylene backing.

Contraindications

There are several circumstances under which you should not use Menostar estrogen patch. This includes experiencing unexplained vaginal bleeding, having breast cancer, a history of breast cancer, or a suspected breast cancer diagnosis. Similarly, having other forms of estrogen-related cancer (e.g. endometrial cancers), a history of blood clots in your legs or lungs, or a stroke, a heart attack means that you should not start this medication. Lastly, do not use Menostar if you have liver disease or impairment, have a blood-clotting disorder, have known allergies to any of Menostar’s ingredients, or are pregnant.

Cautions

  • Before starting Menostar, inform your doctor if you have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancers, or blood clots, stroke or heart disease. They will monitor you closely, as estrogen therapy may put you at a higher risk for these conditions. You should also disclose any other medical conditions you may have.
  • Routine check-ups, such as breast exams, uterine monitoring (if applicable), and bone density tests, are essential for all patients while taking this medication. This allows your doctor to assess periodically whether this treatment and dosage are appropriate and safe for you.
  • Always let your doctor know of any unusual symptoms or health concerns, especially if you experience any unusual vaginal bleeding.
  • Some medications or supplements may affect how your body metabolizes estrogen. Be sure to disclose all the prescription and over-the-counter medications or supplements you take.
  • Inform your healthcare provider before any major surgeries or if you expect to be immobile for long periods. In this case, your doctor may temporarily stop Menostar to lower your risk of blood clots.
  • If you still have a uterus, you may need a progestin to help protect the lining of your uterus.
  • Be aware that heat can increase estrogen absorption. Do not place Menostar estrogen patch in areas that may be exposed to direct heat. This includes heating pads, saunas, or hot tubs.
  • Let your healthcare provider know if your patch falls off frequently or does not stay on well, since this may negatively impact the effectiveness of your treatment.

Side Effects

Common side effects: headache, breast tenderness or pain, irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, stomach or abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, fluid retention, vaginal yeast infection, redness, or irritation at the patch placement site.

Serious, but less common side effects: heart attack, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer, cancer of the lining of the uterus (womb), cancer of the ovary, dementia, high or low blood calcium, gallbladder disease, vision changes, high blood pressure, high levels of fat (triglyceride) in your blood, liver problems, changes in your thyroid hormone levels, cancer changes of endometriosis, enlargement of benign tumors of the uterus (fibroids), and worsening of swelling of face and tongue (angioedema) in women with a history of angioedema.

You may experience additional side effects while using Menostar estrogen patch. If they are persistent or severe, inform your healthcare provider so they can determine whether to stop the medication or lower your dose.
