What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

LIVIAL (tibolone) is a medication prescribed to treat both short- and long-term symptoms that are caused by menopause. LIVIAL has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States. LIVIAL is available by prescription in many other parts of the world.

LIVIAL medication is indicated to treat the following:

  • Symptoms of natural or surgical menopause
  • Second-line prevention of bone mineral density loss in women who have undergone menopause

LIVIAL is converted to three different hormone-like compounds in the body. These compounds have estrogenic, progestogenic, and androgenic activity. The activity of these compounds replaces some of the activity of the natural hormones that decrease with age, especially after menopause. LIVIAL affects several body tissues, including bone, brain, breast, and vaginal cells.

Directions

Due to the risks of hormone replacement therapy, continued usage of LIVIAL should be monitored by the prescribing physician. Generally, treatment should not continue longer than 6 months and should only be continued for as long as the benefit outweighs the risks.

The recommended dose is LIVIAL 2.5 mg by mouth once daily. The medication can be taken with or without food.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in LIVIAL is tibolone.
