What is a Generic Drug?

Kyleena IUD insertion will be performed by a trained healthcare professional. Any questions or concerns may be referred to your doctor.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Kyleena is levonorgestrel. Inactive ingredients include silicone, polyethylene, silver, silica, barium sulfate, polypropylene, and copper phthalocyanine.

Kyleena’s components are not manufactured with natural rubber latex.

Contraindications

There are conditions in which Kyleena should not be used, including:

  • Pregnancy or suspecting pregnancy
  • For emergency contraception
  • Congenital or acquired uterine problems that cause changes in the uterine cavity
  • Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a history of PID unless there has been a subsequent intrauterine pregnancy
  • Postpartum endometritis or infected abortion in the last 3 months
  • Uterine or cervical cancer or if they are suspected
  • Breast cancer or other cancer that is sensitive to progestin or if they are suspected
  • Uterine bleeding with no explanation
  • Untreated acute cervicitis, vaginitis, or lower genital tract infections
  • Acute liver disease or liver tumor that is benign or malignant
  • Increased susceptibility to pelvic infection
  • Intrauterine device that has not been removed
  • An allergy to any of Kyleena’s components

Cautions

  • Before Kyleena is inserted, talk to your doctor about:
    • About all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Kyleena should be removed once pregnancy is detected.
  • Infections can occur after Kyleena is inserted.
  • Your PID risk should be considered before Kyleena insertion.
  • Uterine perforation can occur, potentially decreasing the contraceptive effects of Kyleena and may require surgery.
  • Partial or complete expulsion of Kyleena can go unnoticed, decreasing the contraceptive effects of Kyleena.
  • Evaluation of any enlarged ovarian follicles or cysts should be completed.
  • Menstrual changes can occur.
  • Under certain conditions, MRIs can be safely performed with Kyleena. Before you have any procedures or diagnostics tests, be sure to inform your doctor that you are on Kyleena IUD.

Side Effects

Kyleena IUD side effects include vulvar and vaginal inflammation, ovarian cysts, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, headaches, migraines, acne, menstrual changes, uterine spasms, breast pain or discomfort, and increased bleeding. Other side effects can also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
