What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Kuvan is used with a phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diet to lower Phe levels in the blood in adults and pediatrics one month old and older and have hyperphenylalaninemia due to tetrahydrobiopterin-(BH4-) responsive Phenylketonuria (PKU).

Kuvan tablets and powder for oral solution are available in the following strengths:

  • 100 mg tablet
  • 100 mg powder for oral solution
  • 500 mg powder for oral solution

Directions

Take Kuvan as directed by your doctor. Refer any questions or concerns to your doctor or pharmacist.

The dose of Kuvan depends on the patient’s age and weight.

Take Kuvan with a meal. Swallow the tablets whole or after mixing in a small amount of soft foods (i.e., applesauce or pudding) or dissolved in liquid (water or apple juice). Swallow the oral solution after mixing the powder in a small amount of soft foods or dissolving in recommended liquid.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Kuvan is sapropterin dihydrochloride.

Ascorbic acid (USP), crospovidone (NF), dibasic calcium phosphate (USP), D-mannitol (USP), riboflavin (USP), and sodium stearyl fumarate (NF) are inactive ingredients found in Kuvan tablets.

Ascorbic acid (USP), D-mannitol (USP), potassium citrate (USP), and sucralose (NF) are inactive ingredients found in Kuvan powder for oral solution.

Contraindications

According to the Kuvan Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications to the medication.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Kuvan, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your health history and current medical problems
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Patients with a history of a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to Kuvan should not take the medication.
  • Inflammation of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa, including esophagitis and gastritis, can occur with Kuvan treatment. Patients should be monitored.
  • Pediatric patients less than seven years old and are taking 20 mg/kg per day of Kuvan are at an increased risk for low Phe levels in the blood compared to older patients.
  • Lab testing cannot determine response to Kuvan; this can only be determined by therapeutic trial.
  • Seizure, over-stimulation, or irritability can occur in patients who take Kuvan with levodopa and should be monitored for neurologic status changes.
  • Patients should be monitored for hyperactivity, as this effect can occur with Kuvan treatment.

Side Effects

Headache, runny nose, pharyngolaryngeal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, cough, and nasal congestion are common Kuvan side effects; however, other side effects may occur. If you develop bothersome or persistent side effects, let your doctor know immediately.
