Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Klor-Con is a mineral supplement used to prevent or treat low levels of potassium in the blood, a condition known as hypokalemia. Potassium is important for keeping your heart, nerves, and muscles working properly. Some people need Klor-Con if their potassium levels get too low, which can happen because of certain medicines or health problems. Klor-Con is available as an extended-release tablet that slowly releases potassium in your body over time or as effervescent tablets for oral solution, which are dissolved in water before drinking.

Take Klor-Con tablets by mouth with a full glass of water, usually during or right after meals to reduce stomach upset. If swallowing is difficult, you may break the tablet in half, but do not crush or chew it. The standard adult dose is 40–100 mEq daily, divided into 2 to 5 doses, with a maximum of 200 mEq per day. Remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking Klor-Con and try to take it at the same time each day.
For Klor-Con effervescent tablets, dissolve each tablet completely in at least 4 ounces of cold or ice water before drinking, and do not exceed 25 mEq per dose. The usual adult dose is 25–100 mEq per day, divided into 1 to 4 doses after meals, and higher doses may be prescribed in cases of potassium depletion. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions closely.
Klor-Con contains potassium chloride as its active ingredient.
Do not use this medication if you have high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia), as taking potassium supplements in this situation can cause serious heart problems, including cardiac arrest.
High potassium levels are more likely to occur in people with certain conditions such as chronic kidney disease, severe dehydration, certain acid-base imbalances (like diabetic acidosis), serious burns, and adrenal gland problems. Hyperkalemia can also occur if you are taking medications called potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone, triamterene, or amiloride.
Before using Klor-Con, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
Any existing health conditions
Any allergies
A list of all medications you are currently taking
Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Klor-Con tablets can sometimes cause irritation or injury to the stomach or intestines, especially if the tablet sits in one spot for too long. This can lead to ulcers, narrowing of the digestive tract, or even serious complications like bleeding or blockages. People who have trouble swallowing or digestive issues may be better off using a liquid version instead. Always take Klor-Con with food, never on an empty stomach, to help avoid stomach upset.
Stop taking Klor-Con and contact your doctor right away if you experience severe abdominal pain, swelling, vomiting, or notice blood in your stool. These may be signs of a serious condition that needs immediate attention.
Taking too much can raise potassium levels too high. Blood tests are often needed to monitor potassium levels during treatment.
You should not take Klor-Con with certain water pills known as potassium-sparing diuretics (like spironolactone or amiloride), or with some blood pressure medications called ACE inhibitors (like lisinopril or enalapril), unless your doctor is closely monitoring you. Taking these together can increase the risk of dangerously high potassium.
If you have low potassium due to a condition called metabolic acidosis, your doctor may recommend a specific kind of potassium, such as potassium citrate or bicarbonate, rather than Klor-Con.
The most common side effects of Klor-Con are related to the digestive system and may include nausea, vomiting, gas, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea. These symptoms are often caused by irritation of the stomach lining and may improve if the dose is taken with food or diluted. Rarely, people may develop a skin rash while using this medication.
A serious risk of Klor-Con is hyperkalemia, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Signs may include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or feeling faint. In rare cases, potassium supplements have also been linked to serious stomach problems like bleeding, ulcers, or blockages. Let your doctor know if you have any severe or unusual symptoms while taking this medication.
