What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Ketostix is a urine test that looks for the presence of ketones in the urine. People with diabetes (especially type 1 diabetes) are at risk of ketones building up in the body when blood sugar is too high. High ketones can lead to a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency.

If you have type 1 diabetes, there are several situations where you should measure your urine ketones. Talk with your healthcare provider about when you should test. Ketones are usually tested:

  • When the fasting blood sugar is high (>240 mg/dL)
  • When the blood sugar during the day is high (>300 mg/dL)
  • When you feel nauseated or vomit
  • When you are sick, even if blood sugar is not high
  • Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (talk with your healthcare provider)

People with type 2 diabetes should only measure their ketones when instructed by their healthcare provider.

To use Ketostix:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Use a cup to collect urine.
  • Dip a Ketostix strip into the urine, completely covering the colored portion of the strip.
  • Gently tap the edge of the strip against the side of the container to remove excess urine.
  • Compare the testing area with the chart on the side of the Ketostix bottle.
  • Using a stopwatch, reach the test at exactly 15 seconds after dipping the strip.
  • Record the result and call your healthcare provider if the result is too high

Sodium Nitroprusside 7.1 %, Buffer 92.9 %

Two people should be present to read the results of a Ketostix test to ensure that color-blindness or psychological factors don't affect the reading of the test.

Ketostix expire six months after they are opened or the date on the bottle, whichever comes first.

If you do not follow the directions on the box exactly, the test can produce false results.
