Jalyn (Dutasteride/Tamsulosin)

Description

Jalyn is a medicine that combines dutasteride and tamsulosin. It is used to help men who have an enlarged prostate, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dutasteride lowers the amount of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, it helps shrink the prostate over time and makes it easier to urinate. Tamsulosin works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder and prostate, which also helps urine flow better. Each Jalyn capsule has 0.5 mg of dutasteride and 0.4 mg of tamsulosin hydrochloride.

Directions

Jalyn is a medicine you take by mouth as a capsule. The typical dosage is one capsule once a day, around 30 minutes after the same meal every day. Make sure to swallow the capsule whole and do not chew or crush it. It is important to take this medication as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Jalyn if any of the following apply:

• Pregnancy
• Hypersensitivity or serious skin reactions after taking dutasteride, other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, or tamsulosin

Cautions

• Before taking Jalyn, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
• Any existing health conditions
• Any allergies
• A list of all medications you are currently taking
• Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding

• Jalyn may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up, leading to dizziness or even fainting. This is more likely when starting the medication. To reduce the risk of injury, avoid situations like driving or using heavy machinery until you know how the drug affects you.
• Some medications, like certain antibiotics or antifungals, can increase the amount of Jalyn in your system, which may raise the chance of side effects. Talk to your doctor before using Jalyn with other alpha blockers, erectile dysfunction drugs (like sildenafil), or blood thinners (like warfarin), as this can increase the risk of low blood pressure or bleeding.
• Jalyn can lower your PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels, which is a blood test used to screen for prostate cancer. If you’re getting your PSA checked, make sure your doctor knows you’re on Jalyn—your PSA results may need to be adjusted to reflect the effect of the medication.
• Some studies have found a small increase in the number of high-grade (more aggressive) prostate cancers in men taking drugs like dutasteride, one of the ingredients in Jalyn. It’s unclear why this happens, but your doctor will weigh this risk before starting treatment.
• Women who are pregnant—or may become pregnant—should not handle Jalyn capsules, especially if they are leaking. The active ingredients can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a developing male fetus.
• Men taking Jalyn should not donate blood for at least 6 months after stopping the medication. This is to avoid the risk of exposing a pregnant woman to the drug through a blood transfusion.
• Jalyn may reduce sperm count, volume, and movement in some men. The effect on fertility is not fully known and may not be reversible.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Jalyn include changes in sexual function such as reduced ejaculation, decreased sex drive, and difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Some of these effects may continue even after stopping the medication. Other frequently reported issues include dizziness, a runny nose, and breast changes like pain or enlargement. If you notice nipple discharge or breast lumps, talk to your healthcare provider.

Jalyn may also cause more serious side effects. These include a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing, which can lead to dizziness or fainting—especially when starting treatment. Rare but severe allergic reactions may involve swelling, breathing problems, or skin peeling and require immediate medical attention. Other risks include a higher chance of advanced prostate cancer, complications during cataract or glaucoma surgery, and a painful, prolonged erection that needs urgent care to prevent lasting damage.
