What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Isopto Atropine (atropine sulfate ophthalmic solution) 1% is an eye drop. It is used during eye exams or eye surgeries to dilate the pupils, to temporarily paralyze the muscles of the eyes that keep objects in focus, and to help treat lazy eye.

Directions

Isopto Atropine 1% should be used as advised by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosing for patients three months old and older:

Forty minutes before the intended maximal dilation time, one drop should be placed into the eye(s).

The dose may be repeated up to twice daily as needed for patients three years of age and older.

Isopto Atropine 1% eye drops should be stored between 36°F and 77°F.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Isopto Atropine 1% ophthalmic solution is atropine sulfate monohydrate. Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% is included as a preservative. Inactive ingredients include benzalkonium chloride 0.01% (preservative), hypromellose, boric acid, sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid (to adjust pH), and purified water.

Contraindications

Isopto Atropine 1% eye drops should not be used if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients.

Cautions

  • Before you use Isopto Atropine 1%, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you use, including additional eye drops or ointments
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your current health conditions
    • You past medical history
    • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • While your pupils are dilated, you should avoid hazardous activities, such as driving.
  • After using the drops, you should wear eye protection to protect your eyes from the sun or bright lights; blurry vision and sensitivity may occur.
  • After using the drops, drowsiness may occur.
  • Avoid contamination by making sure the tip of the dispenser does not touch any surface.
  • You may experience an increase in blood pressure.
  • A patient can become more susceptible to adverse drug reactions if they suffer from certain central nervous system conditions including Down syndrome, spastic paralysis, or brain damage.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with Isopto Atropine 1% include the following: eye pain and stinging, blurry vision, sensitivity to light, inflammation of the cornea, decreased tear secretion, drowsiness, increased heart rate, and increased blood pressure. Immediately talk to your doctor if you experience persistent or concerning side effects.
