What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Isaderm Gel is a topical gel formulated for dogs. It is used to treat skin conditions like acute moist dermatitis (“hot spots”) and skin fold dermatitis (intertrigo). The gel contains two main ingredients: one is an antibiotic (fusidic acid) that kills certain bacteria, and the other is a steroid (betamethasone) that helps reduce redness, swelling, and itching. Isaderm Gel is helpful for treating mild skin infections and reducing irritation on the skin’s surface. However, it should not be used on deeper skin wounds, on infections caused by fungi or viruses, or over large areas of skin for a long time.

Directions

Before using Isaderm Gel, gently clip the hair covering the affected area on the dog. Clean the area with an antiseptic wash and let it dry. Apply Isaderm Gel as a thin layer, using about 0.5 cm of gel for every 8 cm² of the lesion. This should be done twice daily. Treatment should last for at least 5 days. Continue using the gel for 48 hours after the skin looks healed. Do not use it for more than 7 days. If there is no visible improvement in 3 days, or if the skin gets worse, the diagnosis should be checked again.

Ingredients

Isaderm contains the active ingredients fusidic acid and betamethasone.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known allergy or sensitivity to any ingredient in the medication
  • Deep skin infection (deep pyoderma)
  • Hot spot lesions with deep swelling, draining sores, or surrounding small bumps or blisters
  • Fungal or viral skin infection
  • Application needed near or on the eyes
  • Need for treatment over large areas of the body or for a long time
  • Previous reaction or intolerance to any active or inactive ingredient

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Dogs should not lick the area where Isaderm Gel is applied, as swallowing the product can be harmful. If there’s a chance your dog could lick or rub the gel into their eyes, especially when applied to a leg, using an Elizabethan collar may help prevent this.
  • This medication contains a steroid that can be absorbed through the skin and may temporarily affect hormone levels. It’s best to use this product under veterinary guidance, especially if your dog has ongoing skin infections like pyoderma, which are often caused by an underlying issue that also needs treatment.
  • Whenever possible, treatment should be based on lab testing to confirm which bacteria are causing the infection. Using this gel incorrectly may increase the risk of antibiotic resistance over time.
  • Isaderm Gel has not been tested in puppies under 7 months old, so its safety in very young dogs isn’t known. Your vet can help decide if it’s appropriate.
  • Always wear disposable gloves when applying this gel. Wash your hands afterward and keep it away from children.
  • Pregnant women should avoid contact with the product, as corticosteroids can be harmful if absorbed through the skin. If the gel is accidentally swallowed, seek medical help immediately and bring the product packaging.
  • People who are allergic to any ingredients in Isaderm Gel should not handle it.

Side Effects

Side effects with Isaderm are uncommon but may occur with prolonged or extensive use. Using the product over large areas of skin may lead to thinning of the skin, slower wound healing, or suppressed adrenal function.

In some cases, skin lightening (depigmentation) may also happen at the application site. If signs of an allergic reaction or sensitivity develop, treatment should be stopped immediately. Pet owners should follow veterinary instructions closely and avoid overuse to minimize potential risks.
