What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

IRESSA (gefitinib) is a type of chemotherapy prescribed to treat a specific type of cancer. IRESSA should only be used by a doctor trained to treat cancer, called an oncologist.

IRESSA treats metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after the failure of platinum-based and docetaxel chemotherapies.

Some cancer cells express a protein on their surface called the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). This protein contributes to the uncontrolled replication of cancerous cells. IRESSA works by attaching to a second protein that activates EGFR protein. By attaching to these proteins, IRESSA slows the growth of cancerous cells.

Directions

The standard IRESSA dosage is 250 mg by mouth once daily until the disease gets worse or side effects cannot be tolerated.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed by the oncologist.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in IRESSA is gefitinib.

Interactions

IRESSA can interact with many other prescription medications. Share your entire medication list with your doctor before they prescribe you IRESSA. Drug interactions may increase or decrease the amount of IRESSA in the blood. This can make the drug ineffective or unsafe.

Some of the common drug interactions may include:

  • Abametapir
  • Antacids
  • Conivaptan
  • Dabrafenib
  • Enzalutamide
  • Idelalisib
  • Itraconazole
  • Mifepristone
  • Rifampicin
  • Warfarin

Cautions

Chemotherapy drugs are toxic by nature. Sometimes treatment must stop when side effects become too severe. Your oncologist will review the following precautions with you:

  • Dermatological (skin) toxicity
  • Gastrointestinal toxicity
  • Ocular (eye) toxicity
  • Pulmonary (lung) toxicity

Side Effects

Specific adverse reactions to IRESSA may include:

  • Anorexia
  • Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Paronychia
  • Proteinuria
  • Pruritus
  • Rash
  • Skin reactors
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Xeroderma

Buy IRESSA from Canada Drugs Direct with a valid prescription from your oncologist. Please speak with your doctor before ordering a chemotherapy medication online to make sure they agree. If they do, the IRESSA price may be less expensive online.
