What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Intrarosa is a steroid medicine that helps women who have moderate to severe pain during sex, a problem called dyspareunia, which often happens after menopause. Prasterone works by being converted in the body to estrogen and androgen, hormones that help rebuild and keep the vaginal tissue healthy. Healthcare providers usually recommend Intrarosa for women who have this pain after menopause and want relief without taking hormones that affect the whole body.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Allergic reaction to the active or any inactive ingredients
  • Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding

Cautions

  • Before using Intrarosa you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Because estrogen can affect certain types of cancer, women who currently have or have had breast cancer should not use Intrarosa. This product hasn’t been studied in women with a history of breast cancer.
  • Intrarosa is made for postmenopausal women only. It is not intended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There’s no research showing how the medication might affect an unborn baby or pass into breast milk, so it should not be used during these times.
  • Intrarosa hasn’t been tested in people under 18. Its safety and effectiveness in children or teens are unknown.
  • Some women over 65 used Intrarosa in clinical trials. While it appears to be generally safe in older women, unexpected changes or side effects should be monitored.
  • It’s unclear how Intrarosa affects people with liver or kidney problems because those studies haven’t been done yet. If you have liver or kidney disease, talk to a healthcare provider before using this medication.

Side Effects

The most common side effect reported with Intrarosa is vaginal discharge. In clinical trials, around 6% of women using Intrarosa for 12 weeks experienced this side effect, compared to around 4% of women taking a placebo. In a longer 52-week study, the rate of vaginal discharge increased to around 14% of participants. These effects were generally mild and did not lead to treatment discontinuation for most women.

Another side effect seen in the longer trial was abnormal Pap smear results, which occurred in about 2% of women. These included cases of atypical cervical cells and one instance of a low-grade lesion. Always discuss any unusual symptoms or concerns with a healthcare provider.
