What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Interceptor Spectrum is administered by mouth as a chewable tablet for dogs. The standard dosage depends on the dog's weight, with a typical schedule recommending once-monthly administration. It is safe for dogs and puppies that are at least 6 weeks old and weigh at least 1 kg or 2 lbs. Make sure your dog eats the whole tablet so it works properly. Always follow the instructions on the package, and check with your veterinarian to make sure you are giving the correct amount at the right times. Keep this medicine out of reach of children. Do not give it to a dog that is already showing signs of heartworm disease unless your vet tells you to.

Ingredients

Interceptor Spectrum contains the active ingredients milbemycin oxime and praziquantel.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to milbemycin oxime or praziquantel
  • Dogs weighing less than 1 kg or 2 lbs
  • Puppies younger than 6 weeks
  • Any existing medical conditions that may interact adversely with the ingredients

Cautions

  • Interceptor Spectrum is meant for dogs and should never be used in humans. Like all medications, keep it out of the reach of children and store it safely.
  • This medication should not be used in puppies younger than six weeks old or in dogs that weigh less than two pounds. Always check with your vet to make sure your dog is old enough and big enough for treatment.
  • Before starting Interceptor Spectrum, your dog should be tested for heartworm. This product helps prevent heartworm disease but doesn’t treat existing infections or kill adult heartworms. If your dog already has heartworms, your vet may recommend a different treatment first.
  • Some dogs, especially those with a high number of heartworm larvae in their bloodstream, may have mild side effects like heavy breathing, vomiting, drooling, or tiredness. These reactions are usually temporary but should be reported to your vet.
  • Interceptor Spectrum hasn’t been tested in dogs that are used for breeding or in females that are nursing puppies. Talk to your vet if your dog falls into one of these groups.

Side Effects

Some dogs given Interceptor Spectrum may experience mild side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, or tiredness. Other reported reactions include loss of appetite, drooling, weakness, or uncoordinated movement. These effects are usually temporary, but if they don’t improve or seem severe, it’s best to contact a veterinarian.

Although rare, more serious reactions like seizures or signs of depression have also been reported. If your dog shows unusual behavior or physical symptoms after taking the medication, seek veterinary advice promptly. It's also important for pet owners in certain regions to understand the risks of tapeworm infections that can affect both pets and humans.
