What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Imdur (Isosorbide Mononitrate) is a medication classified as a nitrate. It is used to prevent angina, which is chest pain due to coronary artery disease. The drug works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow and deliver oxygen to the heart. Patients are typically prescribed Isosorbide Mononitrate in tablet form, taken orally. It doesn’t act quickly enough to stop an acute angina attack once it has started, which is why other medications may be prescribed for immediate relief.

Imdur can lower your blood pressure, especially when standing up quickly. This might make you feel lightheaded, dizzy, or even cause you to faint. These symptoms are more likely if you’re dehydrated, taking diuretics, or already have low blood pressure. Use caution when getting up from sitting or lying down, and talk to your doctor if you feel unusually weak or dizzy.

Stopping Imdur suddenly may cause chest pain to return or get worse. If you and your doctor decide to stop treatment, your dose should be reduced gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms or a spike in angina.

Imdur is not recommended for people with recent heart attacks or severe heart failure, since its effects can't be quickly reversed if problems occur. It should also be used with caution in people with narrowing of brain arteries or very low blood pressure.

This medicine may worsen breathing issues or lower oxygen levels in people with lung disease, anemia, or heart failure. Let your doctor know if you have any lung conditions or if you feel short of breath while on this medication.

Drinking alcohol while on Imdur can also increase the risk of side effects like dizziness or fainting.

Side Effects

The most common side effect of Imdur is headache, especially when starting treatment, but this usually gets better after a few days. Some people may also feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, particularly at the beginning. These effects may lessen over time, but let your doctor know if they become bothersome.

In rare cases, taking too much Imdur can cause a severe pulsing headache, nausea, vomiting, or even fainting. If this happens, lie down with your feet raised and seek medical help right away. Everyone reacts differently to medication, so let your doctor or pharmacist know if you notice any unusual side effects. Regular check-ins can help make sure the medication is working safely for you.
