What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Ilium Ear Drops are a medicine for dogs and cats that help treat ear problems like ear mites, bacterial infections, and fungal infections. The drops have several ingredients that work together to fight microbial growth, stop itching, and help your pet feel better. They also help clean out your pet’s ears by removing dirt, wax, and dead skin. They come in a 20 mL bottle with a soft tip, making it easy to put the drops into your pet’s ear.

Directions

Gently shake the Ilium Ear Drops bottle before use. Place the pet in a comfortable position and hold the ear flap upright. Using the dropper bottle, administer 4 to 8 drops into the affected ear twice daily for 4 to 7 days. After applying the drops, massage the base of the ear for a few seconds to help distribute the medication.

Ingredients

Ilium Ear Drops contain the active ingredients Dichlorophen, Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide, and Lignocaine.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • There is a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any ingredients in the medication
  • The eardrum is perforated or there is a suspected ruptured eardrum
  • The pet has ear canal injuries that are bleeding or severe
  • There are signs of ear tumors or unhealed surgical wounds
  • Any other medications or treatments are already being used in the ear unless directed by a veterinarian

Cautions

Before giving Ilium Ear Drops, pet owners should:

  • Tell a veterinarian about any allergies their pet has to medications, especially ear treatments.
  • Share a list of all medicines and supplements their pet takes.
  • Inform the veterinarian if their pet has any ongoing ear problems, including ruptured eardrums.
  • Monitor for signs of ear irritation, redness, swelling, or discharge and notify the veterinarian if any worsen.
  • Avoid allowing the drops to come in contact with the pet’s eyes or mouth.
  • Not use the drops on very young puppies or kittens unless directed by a veterinarian.
  • Discuss with the veterinarian if the pet is pregnant or nursing, as safety is uncertain.
  • Stop using Ilium Ear Drops and seek veterinary care if the pet shows signs of difficulty hearing, confusion, ongoing discomfort, or any unexpected reaction.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and store in a cool, dry place, away from children and other pets.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ilium Ear Drops may include mild irritation, redness, or a burning feeling in or around the ears. Some pets may scratch at their ears more than usual or shake their heads after application. Mild swelling or temporary discomfort at the application site may also occur in some cases.

More serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions, such as severe swelling of the ear or face, intense itching, widespread skin rash, or trouble breathing. If a pet develops signs like open sores, bleeding, or persistent pain in the treated area, stop using the drops and consult a veterinarian.
