What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Two types of man-made insulin, rapid-acting (insulin lispro) and long-acting (insulin lispro protamine), are contained in Humalog Mix25 to help manage diabetes.

Humalog Mix25 comes in cartridges and kwikpens.

Directions

Humalog Mix25 should be used as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns can be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate Humalog Mix25 dosage for you and will instruct you on how to use Humalog Mix25. Humalog Mix25 starts working quickly and, therefore, should be used within 15 minutes before a meal.

Storage:

Unopened cartridges and prefilled pens should be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. They should not be frozen or exposed to heat or sunlight.

Opened cartridges and prefilled pens should be stored at room temperatures below 30°C. They should be exposed to heat or sunlight. They should be discarded after 28 days.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Humalog Mix25 include insulin lispro and insulin lispro protamine.

Contraindications

You should avoid using Humalog Mix25 if you have low blood sugar or an allergy to any of the ingredients in Humalog Mix25.

Cautions

  • The most common side effect of insulin is low blood sugar. It is recommended that blood glucose is monitored in all patients with diabetes. Untreated low blood sugar can cause unconsciousness, coma, or even death.
  • Humalog Mix25 is different from other insulins, and it has a fast onset of action; therefore, it should be given within 15 minutes before a meal.
  • Humalog Mix25 appears as a white suspension and should be administered subcutaneously only. Humalog Mix25 should never be administered into a vein.
  • Insulin regimen changes should only be made with caution and under medical supervision. Due to purity, strength, brand, type, species, and/or method of manufacture changes, a dose change may be needed.
  • Combining Humalog Mix25 with other insulins is not recommended.
  • A dose adjustment may be needed in patients using Humalog Mix25.
  • Before you start treatment with Humalog Mix25, tell your doctor about:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy status
    • Your breastfeeding status
  • If your body lacks adequate insulin, diabetic acidosis and coma can occur.
  • Administering insulin subcutaneously can lead to depression in the skin, thickening of tissue, or skin lumps. If you experience any of these effects, notify your doctor immediately.

Side Effects

Side effects of Humalog Mix 25 include but are not limited to low blood sugar and redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site. Inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects that occur.
