What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Hemangeol (propranolol hydrochloride) is prescribed for treating proliferating infantile hemangioma requiring systemic therapy. Infantile hemangiomas are made of blood vessels that multiply.

Hemangeol is available in an oral solution of the following strength:

  • 4.28 mg propranolol hydrochloride/mL

Directions

Hemangeol dosing: Your baby’s doctor will instruct you on the proper administration of Hemangeol and how much you should administer. Avoid shaking the bottle before use.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.

Hemangeol should be stored at 25°C (77°F); do not freeze. Any remainder should be appropriately discarded after 2 months of opening.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Hemangeol oral solution is the beta-blocker propranolol hydrochloride (4.28 mg/mL). Strawberry/vanilla flavorings, hydroxyethylcellulose, saccharin sodium, citric acid monohydrate, and water are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Hemangeol use should be avoided in the following:

  • Premature infants who are younger than 5 weeks
  • Infants weighing less than 2 kg
  • An allergy to propranolol or to any of the excipients in the medication
  • Asthma or history of bronchospasm
  • Heart rate less than 80 beats per minute, greater than first degree heart block, or decompensated heart failure
  • Blood pressure less than 50/30 mmHg
  • Pheochromocytoma

Cautions

  • Before your baby begins treatment with Hemangeol, inform their doctor of:
    • All the medications they take
    • Their allergies
    • Their current health problems
    • Their past medical history
    • If they are breastfeeding
  • Low blood glucose can occur with Hemangeol use. Corticosteroid treatment can increase this risk. Administer Hemangeol during or after feeding. The medication should be discontinued if low blood glucose occurs. Do not give to patients who cannot eat or are vomiting.
  • Low heart rate or low blood pressure can occur with Hemangeol use. Monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure should be performed.
  • Bronchospasm can occur with Hemangeol use; patients with asthma or a history of bronchospasm should not take the medication.
  • More severe heart failure can occur with Hemangeol use.
  • The risk of stroke in PHACE syndrome patients who have severe cerebrovascular issues may be increased with Hemangeol use.
  • The effects of epinephrine, which is a medication used to treat severe anaphylaxis, may be interfered with by Hemangeol.

Side Effects

Hemangeol side effects include but are not limited to sleep disorders, aggravated respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, and vomiting. Inform your baby’s doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
