What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Gravol Injection, also known as Dimenhydrinate, is an antihistamine that treats and prevents nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. It works by blocking signals to the brain that trigger these symptoms. Classified as an antiemetic and anticholinergic, a Gravol Injection may be particularly beneficial when patients cannot take medications by mouth. It's commonly administered to individuals experiencing motion sickness and those requiring relief from symptoms associated with certain medical procedures.

Directions

Healthcare professionals typically inject this medication into a muscle or directly into a vein depending on the individual's needs and the severity of symptoms. The standard dosage for adults seeking relief from nausea, vomiting, or vertigo due to motion sickness may vary, but it often ranges from 50 to 100 mg every 4 hours as needed. The maximum dosage is 400 mg per 24 hours. Always follow a healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and frequency.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Gravol is Dimenhydrinate.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Gravol or to any of the ingredients in the product
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • During treatment or within 2 weeks after treatment with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
  • Age under 2 years old

Cautions

  • Before using Gravol, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Gravol may cause drowsiness, confusion, or slowed reaction time. Avoid driving, using machinery, or doing anything that requires full alertness until you know how it affects you.
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to Gravol’s side effects—especially confusion, sleepiness, constipation, or trouble urinating. These effects can increase the risk of falls or hospital visits. If you're over 65, talk to your doctor before using Gravol regularly.
  • At high doses, Gravol can cause hallucinations, paranoia, or a “high.” It has a known risk for misuse and dependency, especially in large or frequent doses. Misuse can be dangerous and has led to overdose and even death in some cases.
  • Gravol should be used carefully if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, or breathing problems like asthma or COPD. It is not recommended for people with serious heart rhythm problems or chronic lung disease.
  • Do not use Gravol if you have glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes), an enlarged prostate, or serious urinary problems. It can make these conditions worse. Also avoid if you have severe liver problems or seizure disorders unless directed by a doctor.
  • In very rare cases, Gravol has been linked to serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome. These reactions can be life-threatening. Stop using Gravol and seek medical attention if you develop a rash, blisters, or peeling skin.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Gravol. It’s not clear if it’s completely safe, and small amounts may pass into breast milk.
  • Gravol injection is not recommended for children under 2 years old. In young children, antihistamines like Gravol can cause serious side effects such as restlessness, hallucinations, or seizures—even in small amounts.
  • Avoid using Gravol within 14 days of taking MAO inhibitors (a type of antidepressant), and don’t mix it with alcohol or other sedatives. Let your doctor know about any medications or supplements you’re taking.

Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects of Dimenhydrinate include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth, especially at higher doses. Pain at the injection site may occur with intramuscular use. Some users may also experience nausea, blurred vision, or coordination problems. These effects are generally temporary but can interfere with daily activities.

More serious side effects, though rare, may include heart rhythm changes, confusion, hallucinations, or allergic reactions such as rash or swelling. Dimenhydrinate may also cause urinary retention, mood changes, or respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. Other serious side effects, such as tremors, seizures, and skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, have been reported.
