What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Directions

Glyset should be taken exactly as your doctor has instructed.

Recommended starting dose: Take 25 mg by mouth three times daily prior to meals. Your doctor may gradually adjust your dose.

Ingredients

Miglitol is the active ingredient in Glyset.

Starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, and polysorbate 80 are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Glyset should not be prescribed to patients with an allergy to Glyset or who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, partial intestinal obstruction, colonic ulceration, or who are susceptible to intestinal obstruction.

Glyset should not be prescribed to patients suffering with chronic intestinal diseases characterized by significant absorption or digestive problems, or with conditions that can worsen from increased intestinal gas production.

Cautions

  • Prior to starting Glyset treatment, be sure to discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, supplements, and vitamins
    • Your allergies
    • Any existing health concerns
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding
  • Glyset medication contains the following precautions:
    • Low blood sugar levels
    • Loss of blood sugar control when exposed to stressful situations like trauma, fever, surgery, or infection that may need insulin therapy temporarily
    • Kidney issues
  • Pregnant women should only take Glyset if the benefits are greater than the risks.
  • Women are advised to avoid breastfeeding.
