What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Gel-One Cross-Linked Hyaluronate is a sterile, transparent, and viscoelastic hydrogel injection used to manage knee pain due to osteoarthritis in patients who tried other therapies and did not respond well to them, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or over-the-counter pain relievers.

Gel-One comes in a pre-filled 3 mL syringe (1% solution, 30 mg total hyaluronan). Each syringe is a one-time injection into the knee's intra-articular space. 

The contents of the syringe must be used right away after opening the package. Any unused Gel-One should be discarded.

Ingredients

There is 1% (10 mg/mL) Hyaluronan solution in each 3 mL syringe.

Contraindications

Avoid using Gel-One if you have an allergy to sodium hyaluronate or other ingredients contained in Gel-One.

Avoid using Gel-One if you have a skin condition or infection at or near the area of injection.

Cautions

  • Before you begin treatment with Gel-One, let your doctor know:
    • If you have any allergies
    • Any medications you are taking. These include all prescription and non-prescription medications, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
    • Of any medical conditions you may have
    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • Gel-One should be used following a strict, sterile technique
  • Do not use Gel-One with disinfectants that contain quaternary ammonium salts for the skin. Precipitation of hyaluronate can occur.
  • Do not inject Gel-One into a vessel.
  • Do not inject Gel-One outside of the joint or into the synovial tissue and capsule. 
  • Store Gel-One in conditions below 77°F (25° C). Do not keep it in the freezer.
  • After injecting Gel-One, joint pain, swelling, and/or effusion may occur. These generally resolve on their own or with conservative treatment.
  • Do not overexert yourself within at least 48 hours of using Gel-One.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Gel-One injections include swelling, effusion, and joint stiffness. Please immediately seek medical attention if any bothersome or persistent side effects happen.
