What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

FROVA is the brand name for FROVA medication and is used to treat migraine headaches with or without aura.

FROVA medication is a serotonin agonist and works by binding to serotonin receptors in the blood vessels around the brain. When serotonin receptors are activated in intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves, the blood vessels constrict, relieving intracranial pressure and decreasing the sensation of pain. FROVA medication also slows the release of inflammatory cytokines, preventing further inflammation.

Directions

The medication is supplied as frovatriptan 2.5 mg oral tablets. It should be taken upon experiencing the first warning symptoms of migraine headaches. Take FROVA medication with a full glass of water. If the first dose does not provide relief, a second dose can be taken 2 hours later. The maximum daily dose of frovatriptan is 7.5 mg.

Tolerance to frovatriptan can build quickly, so the medication should not be taken daily and usage should be spread out as much as possible.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in FROVA is frovatriptan succinate.

Cautions

FROVA medication is CONTRAINDICATED if you have:

  • Cardiac arrhythmias like Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
  • History of cerebral vascular accident (stroke) or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Ischemic coronary artery disease (history of heart attack, angina, or vascular ischemia)
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Use of another serotonin agonist (triptan) within 24 hours

You should have a full cardiac workup and history performed before being prescribed FROVA medication.

Do not take frovatriptan more frequently than directed by a physician. Overusing serotonin agonists like frovatriptan can lead to worsening of headaches and drug tolerance.

Frovatriptan can interact with other serotonergic drugs like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine inhibitors (SNRIs), and others. Excessive serotonin exposure can cause a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome, which presents with altered mental status, rapid heart rate, confusion, tremor, loss of muscle coordination, and other autonomic instabilities. Some over-the-counter (OTC) medications can contribute to this interaction by increasing serotonin. Talk to your physician or pharmacist before starting any new medications while taking FROVA medication.
