What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Freestyle is a blood glucose monitoring machine used by people with diabetes mellitus. A blood glucose machine, or a glucometer, is used with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

People with diabetes do not have enough insulin to meet their metabolic needs. Without enough insulin, their blood sugar levels are too high, and high blood sugar leads to organ damage.

Glucometers are used to help determine the dose of anti-diabetic medication. They also assess the level of blood sugar control.

Directions

When testing your blood sugar, read your owner's manual first, and follow all directions carefully.

When starting, ensure you have a clean area for all of your supplies.

  1. Choose a finger for testing.
  2. Wipe the area with an alcohol pad, and allow the alcohol to dry.
  3. While the alcohol dries, insert a test strip into the glucometer.
  4. Use the lancing device to poke a hole in the clean area of your finger.
  5. Gently squeeze the area around the finger to form a bead of blood.
  6. Touch the tip of the test strip to the blood until the glucometer beeps.

Keep a journal of your blood sugar readings to share with your healthcare provider.

Ingredients

Using a glucometer requires the following supplies:

  • Blood glucose testing meter
  • Blood glucose test strips
  • Lancets or a lancing device
  • Alcohol pads

Cautions

Do not share your lancets with others or use them more than once to help lower infection risk.

Do not change your dose of medication without talking with your healthcare provider first.

Check your test strips before use to make sure they are not expired.
