What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Fosamax Plus D (Alendronate and cholecalciferol) is a medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis.

Fosamax Plus D is a combination medication that includes both alendronate and vitamin D. Taken together, this combination helps to increase the formation of bone tissue and prevent bone loss to osteoporosis.

Directions

Take Fosamax Plus D once weekly. It should be taken on the same day each week on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day.

Ingredients

FOSAMAX 70 mg/2800 I.U. contains 70 mg of alendronate sodium and 2800 international units of vitamin D.

Alendronate Sodium

Alendronate sodium belongs to the drug class bisphosphonates. It localizes to sites of bone formation and is taken up by osteoclasts, which are responsible for bone resorption. After it is taken up by osteoclasts, it adheres to their cell membrane and acts as a cellular scaffold for bone formation. Alendronate is permanently incorporated into bone tissue and the administration must continue to prevent bone loss and to cause the formation of new bone mass.

Vitamin D

Vitamin is a naturally occuring hormone that is formed in skin cells upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Vitamin D may also be absorbed orally in the diet.

Vitamin D is responsible for regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body. It increases the absorption of the minerals calcium and phosphate and regulates how much is lost via renal excretion.

Cautions

Osteonecrosis (ONJ) of the jaw has been reported in patients taking bisphosphonates. Risk factors include invasive dental procedures, cancer, drug interactions, poor oral hygiene, and certain comorbid disorders. The risk of ONJ may increase with the duration of exposure.

Fosamax Plus D is not recommended for patients with impaired renal function.

This is not a complete list of warnings and precautions; speak with your doctor about your known medical history before starting Fosamax Plus D.
