What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Fortekor contains an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used in dogs and cats. Veterinarians may prescribe it to help manage heart failure in dogs and chronic kidney disease in cats. Its active ingredient, Benazepril, works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart, which may help improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. It comes as flavored tablets, so it's easier to give to your dog or cat.

Directions

Fortekor 2.5 mg tablets are given by mouth once a day, with or without food. For dogs, the usual dosage is half a tablet daily for those weighing 2.5 to 5 kg, and one tablet daily for those over 5 to 10 kg; your vet may recommend doubling the dose if needed. For cats, give one tablet daily for cats weighing 2.5 to 5 kg, and two tablets daily for those over 5 to 10 kg. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions, and let them know if your pet vomits, loses their appetite, or seems unusually tired, as the dose may need to be changed. Treatment can continue as long as recommended by your veterinarian.

Ingredients

Fortekor contains the active ingredient Benazepril.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication in dogs and cats in which the following apply:

  • Allergy to Benazepril or tablet ingredients
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood volume
  • Low blood sodium
  • Sudden kidney failure Heart problems caused by narrowed heart valves
  • Pregnancy
  • Nursing mothers

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Fortekor has not been proven safe or effective in dogs or cats that weigh less than 2.5 kg (about 5.5 pounds). Talk to your vet about other options if your pet is very small.
  • If your pet has chronic kidney disease, your vet will likely check their hydration and may recommend regular blood tests. These help track kidney function and red blood cell levels while on treatment.
  • Always wash your hands after giving Fortekor to your pet. If you accidentally swallow it, get medical help right away and bring the medication package with you.
  • Pregnant women should avoid handling Fortekor if there's a chance of swallowing it by accident. Similar medications have been linked to serious effects on unborn babies in humans.
  • Fortekor should not be used in pregnant or nursing dogs or cats. Its safety has not been confirmed for pets that are breeding, pregnant, or feeding their young.
  • Let your vet know about all medications your pet is taking. Fortekor has been used safely with drugs like diuretics, pimobendan, and digoxin in dogs with heart failure. But mixing it with certain drugs, like NSAIDs or blood pressure medications, could affect kidney function or blood pressure. Signs like weakness or tiredness should be reported to your vet right away.
  • If your pet is taking a potassium-sparing diuretic like spironolactone, there’s a risk of high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). Your vet may run blood tests to keep potassium in a safe range.
  • If your pet accidentally gets too much Fortekor, it could cause low blood pressure. Treatment usually involves IV fluids. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect an overdose.
  • Don’t throw leftover Fortekor in the trash or down the drain. Ask your vet how to safely dispose of it based on local guidelines.

Side Effects

Some dogs treated with Fortekor for congestive heart failure may experience vomiting or fatigue, especially during the course of treatment. In both dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease, mild increases in blood creatinine levels may occur but are often not a cause for stopping treatment unless accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

In cats, Fortekor may lead to increased appetite and weight gain. Rare side effects in cats include vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dehydration, and lethargy. If any unusual signs develop or the medication seems ineffective, pet owners should contact their veterinarian.
