What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Flovent inhaler is a prescription inhaler used for the treatment of asthma. It is indicated for use by patients aged four and older.

Your healthcare professional may prescribe this inhaler to reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks.

Symptoms of asthma include chest pain, trouble breathing, cough, and wheezing

Directions

Flovent HFA is available in three different inhaler sizes:

  • Flovent HFA 44 mcg
  • Flovent HFA 110 mcg
  • Flovent HFA 220 mcg

The usual dosage is between 88 mcg inhaled by mouth twice daily to a maximum of 440 mcg inhaled by mouth twice daily. Certain patients may require up to 880 mcg twice daily for a short amount of time.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Flovent is fluticasone propionate.

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions are unlikely with inhaled Flovent because not very much of the medication enters the bloodstream. However, use caution if you are taking any of the following medications.

  • Aprepitant
  • Atazanavir
  • Ceritinib
  • Clarithromycin
  • Cobicistat and cobicistat-containing coformulations
  • Darunavir
  • Desmopressin
  • Fosaprepitant
  • Idelalisib
  • Indinavir
  • Itraconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Lonafarnib
  • Lopinavir
  • Loxapine
  • Mifepristone
  • Nefazodone
  • Nelfinavir
  • Ombitasvir-paritaprevir-ritonavir plus dasabuvir
  • Posaconazole
  • Ritonavir and ritonavir-containing coformulations
  • Saquinavir
  • Smoked tobacco
  • Telithromycin
  • Tucatinib
  • Voriconazole

Cautions

Flovent HFA cannot be used as a rescue inhaler. You should also have a short-acting inhaler like albuterol for rescue use.

Rinse your mouth after each use of Flovent to prevent an oral fungal infection of the mouth and throat.
