What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

During the initial phase, Fanapt must be titrated from a low starting dose to avoid potential side effects such as orthostatic hypotension. The typical Fanapt dosing schedule begins with 1 mg taken orally twice a day on the first day of treatment. The dosage is then gradually increased by 2 mg per day until an effective dose of 12 mg to 24 mg taken orally twice a day is reached.

Please note that control of schizophrenia symptoms may be delayed during the first couple of weeks of therapy. Follow the prescribed dosing schedule and consult a healthcare provider for any questions or concerns about how to take the medication.

Ingredients

The main ingredient in this medication is Iloperidone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Fanapt if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to Iloperidone or any of its ingredients. Consult a healthcare professional before taking Fanapt to ensure its safety and effectiveness.

Cautions

  • Before taking Fanapt, discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
    • All medications you are currently taking, particularly drugs that affect your heart, blood pressure, or mood.
    • Any pre-existing medical conditions you may have, such as heart issues, diabetes, seizures, or liver problems.
    • Any risk factors that could affect your bone mineral density, including lifestyle habits and family history.
    • If you are a woman who is pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Older adults should note that Fanapt has been associated with an increased risk of stroke and transient ischemic attacks in elderly patients. If you belong to this age group, you may need to explore alternative treatments.
  • If you have a history of issues affecting your QT interval, exercise caution. Fanapt has the potential to prolong the QT interval, requiring frequent monitoring and possible changes to other medications you might be taking.
  • If you have a tendency to experience seizures or have medical conditions that make seizures more likely, discuss these openly with your healthcare provider. Your treatment plan might need adjustments in such cases.
  • Should you have a history of low white blood cell counts, or conditions like leukopenia or neutropenia, frequent complete blood count (CBC) tests may be necessary in the early stages of your Fanapt treatment.
  • If you experience priapism, an extended and painful erection, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Be cautious of side effects like dizziness, low blood pressure, and drowsiness when on Fanapt. These side effects could affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.
  • Be aware that Fanapt is linked to a severe condition known as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). If you develop symptoms like high fever, muscle stiffness, rapid heartbeat, or confusion, immediate medical help is warranted.
  • Fanapt may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions, especially among younger adults. Keep a close eye on your mental health and report any changes to your healthcare provider.
  • Regular monitoring of blood sugar, lipid, and prolactin levels is advised as Fanapt may cause elevations in these levels.
  • Some individuals might experience involuntary movements, particularly with long-term use of Fanapt. If such symptoms occur, consulting your healthcare provider is recommended.

Side Effects

Fanapt has the potential to cause side effects. Common Fanapt side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, nasal congestion, a faster heartbeat, weight gain, and decreased blood pressure. Some people may also experience other side effects like fatigue, diarrhea, and shakiness. Monitor these side effects and consult a medical expert about any concerns if these side effects develop, persist, or worsen.

Fanapt could lead to severe health complications requiring prompt medical attention. Serious side effects may include severely low blood pressure, seizures, cognitive or motor function problems, painful erections, and an increased risk of suicide, stroke, and heart attack. In addition, Fanapt carries a black box warning for an increased risk of death in older people with dementia-related psychosis.

Fanapt could also cause an increase in prolactin levels, leading to potential issues such as menstrual irregularities in women, spontaneous milk production, reduced sexual interest in men, and other complications. If you encounter any of these side effects while on Fanapt, immediately consult a medical professional.
