What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Exforge HCT contains three prescription medications used to treat high blood pressure in adults. It should not be used as initial therapy. 

The three medications in Exforge HCT are amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker; valsartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker; and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic (fluid pill).

Exforge HCT comes in oral tablets (amlodipine/valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide) in the following strengths:

  • 5 mg/160 mg/12.5 mg
  • 10 mg/160 mg/12.5 mg
  • 5 mg/160 mg/25 mg
  • 10 mg/160 mg/25 mg
  • 10 mg/320 mg/25 mg

Exforge HCT is generally taken by mouth once daily. The recommended maximum dose is 10 mg/320 mg/25 mg per day.

Ingredients

Exforge HCT contains amlodipine, valsartan, and hydrochlorothiazide. 

The inactive ingredients contained in all Exforge HCT tablets include microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, macrogol 4000, and talc. The 5 mg/160 mg/12.5 mg tablet also contains titanium dioxide; the 10 mg/160 mg/12.5 mg tablet also contains titanium dioxide and yellow and red iron oxides; the 5 mg/160 mg/25 mg tablet also contains titanium dioxide and yellow iron oxide; the 10 mg/160 mg/25 mg and 10 mg/320 mg/25 mg tablets also contain yellow iron oxide. 

Contraindications

Do not take Exforge HCT if you are allergic to amlodipine, valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide or any of its other ingredients or excipients.

Do not take Exforge HCT if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.

Do not take Exforge HCT if your kidneys are not producing urine.

Cautions

Exforge HCT contains a FDA Boxed Warning against the use of the medication during pregnancy. Exforge HCT can cause harm and death to an unborn baby.

  • Before you start treatment with Exforge HCT, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and current health problems
    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • Exforge HCT can cause low blood pressure, especially in patients who are volume depleted.
  • Worsening chest pain and/or a heart attack can occur with initiation or dosage increase of amlodipine. The risk is greater in patients who have severe obstructive coronary artery disease.
  • Exforge HCT can cause kidney problems.
  • Exforge HCT can cause abnormal potassium levels.
  • Thiazide diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide, which is a component of Exforge HCT, can worsen or cause lupus.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide, which is a component of Exforge HCT, can cause acute angle-closure glaucoma. Contact your doctor right away if you develop vision problems or eye pain.
  • Allergic reactions to hydrochlorothiazide, which is a component of Exforge HCT, can occur. Patients with a history of allergy or bronchial asthma are at greater risk.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide, which is a component of Exforge HCT, may increase blood sugar, cholesterol, triglyceride, calcium, and uric acid levels.

Side Effects

Exforge HCT side effects include peripheral edema, headache, indigestion, fatigue, muscle spasms, back pain, nausea, and nasopharyngitis; however, these are not all the side effects that can occur with Exforge HCT use.
