What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Exelon Patch (rivastigmine transdermal system) is used to treat dementia of the Alzheimer's type and dementia associated with Parkinson's disease.

Directions

Use the patch as instructed by your doctor. Carefully read the information that comes with your Exelon Patch prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.

Exelon Patch comes in three strengths: 4.6 mg/24 hours, 9.5 mg/24 hours, and 13.3 mg/24 hours. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dosage for you.

Exelon Patch Dose: Place one Exelon Patch onto undamaged, clean, dry, and hairless skin and leave it on for 24 hours. Do not apply the patch to areas of the body where the patch can be rubbed off by clothing. Remove the patch and apply a new one every 24 hours at the same time each day. Use a different application site every day. The same area may be used, but not the same spot for at least 2 weeks after your last patch application.

After you bathe, swim, or shower, check your patch to ensure that it is not loose. If your patch falls off, you may put on a new patch right away and remove it the next day at the usual time. Overlays, bandages, or tape should not be used to keep the Exelon Patch from falling off.

If a dose is missed or you forget to change your Exelon Patch, you may place your patch as soon as you remember. Avoid placing 2 patches to make up for the missed dose. Contact your doctor if you miss more than 3 doses. Always take off your old patch and discard it before applying a new patch.

Use only one patch once a day. Too much medicine in your body can occur if you apply more than one patch at one time. If you apply more than one patch at one time, call your doctor right away. If you are unable to get in contact with your doctor, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or immediately go to your nearest emergency room.

Avoid touching your eyes after you touch the Exelon Patch. Do not be in the sun, saunas, or sunrooms for prolonged duration.

Ingredients

Rivastigmine is the active ingredient in each Exelon Patch. Acrylic copolymer, poly (butylmethacrylate, methylmethacrylate), silicon adhesive applied to a flexible polymer backing film, silicone oil, and vitamin E are other components included in each patch.
