What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Exelon (rivastigmine tartrate) is used to treat Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease Dementia.

Exelon is available in 1.5 mg, 3 mg, 4.5 mg, and 6 mg oral capsules. It's also available in a 2 mg/mL oral solution.

Directions

Take Exelon as prescribed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have. 

Exelon Dosage 

The recommended starting dose is 1.5 mg by mouth two times a day, with the morning and evening meals. The doctor may gradually increase the dose as tolerated.

Ingredients

Rivastigmine is the active ingredient in Exelon. 

Contraindications

Do not use Exelon if you are allergic to rivastigmine, carbamate derivatives, or other components of medication.

Do not use Exelon if you have ever had reactions at the application site after using the Exelon Patch.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Exelon, talk to your doctor about the following:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and current health conditions
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, decreased appetite, and weight loss can occur during treatment with Exelon. Dehydration may occur due to vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Allergic dermatitis can occur with the use of Exelon. Call your doctor if this occurs.
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms may occur or worsen with the use of Exelon. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as tremor may worsen with the use of Exelon.
  • Seizures may occur with the use of Exelon.
  • The risk of peptic ulcers and bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract may be increased with the use of Exelon. Seek medical care right away if you have dark, tarry stools or if you have blood in your vomit.
  • Significant succinylcholine-type muscle relaxation can occur during anesthesia in patients who take Exelon.
  • Exelon can cause slow heart rate.
  • Exelon may cause urinary obstruction, although it has not been seen in clinical trials.
  • Exelon should be used with caution in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the Exelon affects you.

Side Effects

Common Exelon side effects include nausea, vomiting, weight loss, decreased appetite, anorexia, and diarrhea. However, these are not all the side effects that can occur with Exelon. 

Contact your doctor right away if you develop side effects that are bothersome or persistent.
