What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Embrace Blood Glucose Meter (glucometer) is a tool to measure blood sugar in people with diabetes. The most common types of diabetes are Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In both cases, a person has too much glucose in their blood.

High levels of glucose can cause damage to organs, including the eyes, kidneys, and blood vessels. Embrace glucometer can help a person better manage their blood sugar with diet, exercise, and medication dosages.

Compared to other glucometers, Embrace speaks to the user in either English or Spanish. Therefore it is good for people with visual impairments.

Directions

Consult the Embrace blood glucose meter user guide the first time you set up the device. It will prompt you to set the date and time during the first use.

Follow these instructions for blood sugar testing:

  1. Choose a finger to test and wash the site with soap and water or an alcohol pad. If you are unsure of correct testing locations, consult your healthcare provider.
  2. Put a test strip into the glucometer.
  3. Use a lancing site to pierce a hole in the skin of the desired finger. Choose a spot off to the side of the fingertip.
  4. Touch the blood to the tip of the test strip.
  5. If done correctly, the glucometer will play a melody for six seconds and then display the result.

Cautions

Do not use test strips or lancets more than one time.

If you are unsure of a result, always test more than once.

If a result is outside of the normal testing range (70-200 for most people), then use an appropriate treatment method for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
