Follow your doctor's instructions on how to take Elmiron and for how long. Any questions or concerns you may have can be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

The recommended dose of Elmiron is 100 mg by mouth three times a day, at least 1 hour before or two hours after meals. Take the capsules with water.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in each Elmiron capsule is pentosan polysulfate sodium. Microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, gelatin, pharmaceutical glaze (modified) in SD-45, synthetic black iron oxide, FD and C Blue No. 2 aluminum lake, FD and C Red No. 40 aluminum lake, FD and C Blue No. 1 aluminum lake, D and C Yellow No. 10 aluminum lake, n-butyl alcohol, propylene glycol, SDA-3A alcohol, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

You should avoid Elmiron use if you are allergic to the medication or to any of its excipients.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Elmiron, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and current health problems
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Pigment changes in the retina and vision problems may occur during treatment with Elmiron.
  • Bleeding may occur with the use of Elmiron. Watch for signs and symptoms of bleeding such as bleeding from your gums; dark, tarry stools; and nosebleeds that won't resolve after 10-15 minutes of applying pressure. Seek medical care immediately if any of these effects occur. If you experience a fall or a hit on the head, be sure to seek medical care right away.
  • Hair loss may occur with the use of Elmiron.
  • Use Elmiron cautiously if you have liver problems.
