What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Durolane is a medicated injection used by patients who did not experience improvement with non-pharmacological therapies or simple pain relievers such as acetaminophen to relieve pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee.

Sodium hyaluronate that helps lubricate and cushion the knee joints is contained in Durolane injection; this provides pain relief.

Directions

If you have any questions or concerns about Durolane, talk to your doctor. You and your doctor should discuss your treatment schedule.

Durolane 60 mg/3 mL comes in 3 mL pre-filled syringes. Each mL of Durolane contains 20 mg of stabilized sodium hyaluronate. One syringe of Durolane should be injected into the knee joint.

Ingredients

One pre-filled syringe includes 20 mg of stabilized sodium hyaluronate per mL. Sodium chloride, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, and water for injection are other included ingredients.

Contraindications

Do not use Durolane injections if you have infections in the knee joint; also, do not use Durolane if you have infections or diseases at the injection site of the skin.

Avoid using Durolane injections if you have an allergy to sodium hyaluronate or any of the other ingredients contained in the medication.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Durolane, tell your doctor:
    • About any allergies you may have
    • About any medications you take
    • If you have any health problems or conditions
    • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • When using Durolane, strict aseptic administration technique is recommended.
  • Each Durolane injection is a single-dose. The injection must be used once the package is opened. Do not re-use Durolane injections. Properly dispose of any syringes and unused Durolane.
  • If the syringe blister package is opened or damaged, do not use.
  • You should not use skin disinfectants that contain quaternary ammonium salts.
  • Do not inject Durolane into blood vessels, outside of the joint, or into the synovial tissue or capsule.
  • Use caution while using Durolane if you have pre-existing chondrocalcinosis; the injection could cause an attack.
  • Avoid participating in strenuous or prolonged weight-bearing activities within 48 hours of receiving a Durolane injection.
  • Pain or swelling of the affected knee joint after receiving a Durolane injection may occur.
  • Store Durolane at temperatures between 32°F-86° F (0°F-30° C).

Side Effects

Immediately tell your doctor If you develop troublesome or persistent side effects. Pain at the injection site and swelling and pain at the joint are side effects associated with Durolane.
