What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

DOVONEX ointment (calcipotriol or calcipotriene) is a topical medication used to treat plaque psoriasis. DOVONEX ointment is a synthetic analog of vitamin D3. Vitamin D is a naturally occurring hormone produced in the skin with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. DOVONEX ointment works by binding to vitamin D receptors on the surface of skin cells, preventing cells from proliferating and halting inflammatory immune reactions.

Plaque psoriasis is a chronic disease with interspersed periods of acute eruption and remission; it is characterized by inflammation of the skin and joint tissue. Psoriasis plaques typically have well-defined borders with a silvery-scaled upper layer of skin. Plaque psoriasis is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Directions

Apply a thin layer of DOVONEX ointment to the affected area once or twice daily. Rub completely into the skin.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in DOVONEX ointment is calcipotriol 0.005%.

Inactive ingredients include Alpha-tocopherol, EDTA, mineral oil, petrolatum, propylene glycol, sodium phosphate, steareth-2, water.

Cautions

DOVONEX ointment should only be used externally, and avoid contact with the face and eyes. Wash hands after applying DOVONEX ointment.

If irritation develops while using DOVONEX ointment, the prescriber should be alerted and the medication may need to be stopped.

Patients using DOVONEX ointment should avoid exposure to natural and artificial sources of sunlight.

Studies in animals have shown that DOVONEX ointment may be harmful to the developing fetus, so it should be used with caution by women who are pregnant or intending to become pregnant. DOVONEX ointment should be used with caution in women who are breastfeeding as it may be excreted in breastmilk.

DOVONEX ointment has not been established safe in patients under the age of 18 and they may be at a greater risk of side because of a higher ratio of skin surface area to body mass.

Side Effects

The most common DOVONEX ointment side effects include:

  • Burning
  • Dermatitis
  • Dry skin
  • Folliculitis
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Itching
