What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Diprolene is a high-potency topical corticosteroid containing betamethasone dipropionate, indicated for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including psoriasis, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and lichen planus. Diprolene acts by suppressing the release of inflammatory mediators, reducing vasodilation, and decreasing collagen synthesis. It is available in cream, ointment, gel, and lotion formulations, with augmented formulations designed to enhance skin penetration and increase efficacy in resistant dermatoses.

Directions

Apply a thin layer of Diprolene to the affected area once or twice daily, depending on the severity and the formulation used.

  • Use sparingly and do not occlude unless directed by a physician.
  • Do not use on the face, groin, or axillae unless specifically instructed.
  • Limit use to 2–4 consecutive weeks to avoid local and systemic adverse effects.
  • Not recommended for pediatric patients under 12 years unless under specialist supervision.

Ingredients

Each gram of Diprolene contains:

  • Betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% (augmented formulation)

Inactive ingredients vary by formulation and may include:

  • Propylene glycol, mineral oil, petrolatum, cetostearyl alcohol, purified water, and preservatives

Note: The augmented cream and ointment enhance penetration through the stratum corneum.

Contraindications

Diprolene is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Hypersensitivity to betamethasone dipropionate or any formulation components
  • Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
  • Fungal or tubercular skin infections without appropriate antifungal or antimicrobial coverage
  • Rosacea or perioral dermatitis, particularly with facial application

Cautions

Prolonged use, especially under occlusion or on large surface areas, can lead to systemic corticosteroid absorption, resulting in adrenal suppression, Cushing’s syndrome, hyperglycemia, and growth suppression in children. Avoid use on broken or atrophic skin. Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus or immunosuppression. Regularly assess for local side effects, including skin thinning, telangiectasia, and striae. Discontinue if irritation or infection develops. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and avoid prolonged use during breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Common and potential side effects include:

  • Burning, itching, or irritation at application site
  • Skin atrophy or thinning
  • Stretch marks (striae)
  • Folliculitis or acneiform eruptions
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Rare: systemic absorption effects such as adrenal suppression, especially in pediatric use or prolonged therapy
