What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Diflucan is an antifungal medication that is used to treat Candida vaginal yeast infections, Candida infections in the mouth and throat, and cryptococcal meningitis.

Diflucan is also used to decrease the risk of Candida infections in patients who are receiving a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy and/or radiation.

Fluconazole is the Diflucan generic name.

Diflucan comes in oral tablets of 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg strengths. It also comes as an oral suspension of 350 mg or 1,400 mg of fluconazole per bottle.

Directions

Take Diflucan as your doctor has directed. Be sure to complete the full course of therapy, even if you start to feel better.

Your doctor will determine the right Diflucan dosage and treatment duration for you.

Diflucan oral suspension should be stored between 41°F and 86°F (5°C to 30°C).

Ingredients

Fluconazole, an antifungal, is the active ingredient contained in Diflucan.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to fluconazole or to any of its ingredients should not take Diflucan.

Patients should not take Diflucan with erythromycin, pimozide, quinidine, or any other medications that can cause QT prolongation.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Diflucan, inform your doctor of the following:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and current health problems
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Diflucan can cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Patients are advised to seek emergency care right away if they have trouble breathing, a rash, or swelling of their face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Diflucan can cause injury to the liver. Patients with liver problems should use Diflucan cautiously. 
  • Fetal harm can occur with Diflucan use. Women of childbearing age should use effective forms of birth control during treatment.

Side Effects

Headache, nausea, and stomach pain are common Diflucan side effects. However, these are not all the side effects that Diflucan can cause. Call your doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
